ADMISSIONS - Undergraduate Admission - Q. How does KNU decide whom to admit?
A. Admission decisions are based on a number of factors, including academic achievement such as grade point average(GPA), study plan, personal statements, letters of recommendation, as well as other achievement records and/or descriptions of specific qualifications.
In reviewing applications, the admissions committee considers the level of studies completed, the quality of achievement, characteristics of institution attended, appropriateness of goals and suitability of preparation for the proposed program of studies.
Proficiency in Korean and other languages is also taken into consideration. Depending on the policy of the college or department to which the applicant is applying, interviews and examinations may also be required.
Applicants will be notified of interviews when deemed necessary. - Q. What does an "applicant of Korean origin" mean?
A. An "applicant of Korean origin" is one who has received his/her entire elementary, junior high and high school (and undergraduate if applicable) education outside of Korea AND meets ONE of the following criteria:
- 1) He or she is a Korean citizen
- 2) He or she acquired foreign citizenship after entering elementary school
- 3) One of his or her parents is a Korean citizen

- Q. How do I get an study plan form?

- Q. I want to study at KNU for 1 or 2 semesters. How can I apply for?
A. You can apply for the exchange student program if you are attending a University that has a Student Exchange Agreement with KNU. The first thing you should do is to visit your international office at your university and check the procedure and requirements for the exchange program.
- Q. How can I transfer my credits earned at KNU to my home university?
A. The procedure and details for transferring credits you have earned at KNU should be decided by your home University. The only thing we can do regarding your credit transfer is to issue an English transcript from our registrar's office to the International Office at your home university
- Q. When does the program start?
A. Spring semester starts 1 March 1st each year and ends mid-June. Fall semester starts September 1st and ends mid-December.
- Q. What language do I have to use to study as an exchange student at KNU?
A. We have classes taught in English at the Faculty of Business, Animal Sciences. If you want to classes taught in English, you can take courses at the faculties mentioned above.
When you want to learn Korean language at KNU, you may be positioned at the Department of Korean Language and Literature. For those students who want studya at the Faculty of Art, both Korean and English may be used at the same time in some classes. When you are seriously interested in studying at KNU, please visit and ask to your international office at your home institution and we will be contacted through your international office.
- Q. I want to study at KNU for 1 or 2 semesters. How can I apply for?

- Q. I am an American citizen currently teaching English in a high school I Busan with an E-2 visa. If I were to engage myself in a master's degree program using my after work hours, would I have to obtain a work visa again after obtaining a student visa?
A. Since July 2010, E-visas holders in South Korea are permitted to pursue academic studies without further approval of the immigration office as long as they maintain their employment status.
If one decides to commit oneself solely to the academic pursuits, one needs to change the work visa to a student visa. (i.e. D-2) Once the student visa is obtained, he or she is exempt from the grace period and may take on part-time jobs to work 20 hours/week.

It's already been a month since my arrival in Korea and this worries me as to whether I've missed the deadline for such a duty. Until when do I have to do my foreign registration?
A. Foreigner registration is processed at the local immigration office of your residence within 90 days of entry.
Foreign students are required to apply in person for foreign registration within 90 days of their arrival in Korea. This may be done either at the Korea Immigration Service, under the Ministry of Justice, that administers the applicant's place of residence or at its regional offices. There are 37 bureaus of Korea Immigration Service across Korea and further specific information concerning this issue is available only on the website of the Korea Immigration Service.

I've lost my alien registration card while traveling over the weekend. Is it possible for me to get my card reissued immediately from the university or just use my passport in its place instead of reissuing it?
A. The alien registration card is one of the most essential identification cards for foreign students in their everyday life in Korea. Hence it is imperative that you should get your alien card reissued. It is processed at the Korea Immigration Service or its regional offices and following materials are required for the reissuance.

- Q. I'm in my last semester of graduate school, having great difficulty in writing my paper due to lack of language competency. Since there is a chance of me not being able to finish my paper on time this semester, I think I should extend my student visa. Would this be possible?
A. Assuming that your paper didn't pass despite your reasonably adequate effort, the student visa can be extended up to 1 year for Master's and 2 years for PhD students. Documents required for such a visa extension are as follows:

3. Recommendation from the supervisor: specific statement that addresses the process of paper supervision and the reasons for delay
4. Administration fee (30,000 won revenue stamp)
5. Courses completed certificate
* More documents/materials may be asked of the applicant if it deemed necessary in the course of assessment.
* As of the first extension, the student visa can be extended up to 1 year for masters and 3 years for PhD students. If one fails to pass her paper from then on despite her reasonably adequate effort, the visa may be extended up to 6 months for masters and 1 year for PhD students at each time. - Q. Do I have to get my visa reissued when I return to school?
I'm in my third year in the university and I plan on taking a semester/year off due to my family situation. I want to know how long I will be allowed to stay in Korea after submitting my semester/year off request and whether I can come back to Korea without having to apply for a visa as long as I return before the expiration date inscribed on my alien registration card.A. Once you submit the semester or year off request, you must leave Korea within 2 weeks regardless the expiration date on your alien registration card. Your stay will be considered illegal after the aforementioned deadline. You should reapply for a visa on your return to school before arriving in Korea.
* When filing for a semester or year off request, make sure that you consult your instructor and counselor and prepare yourself with documents required for your re-entry to Korea. - Q. If I wish to invite my parents, what are the things that I should prepare?
I'm a PhD student under the Korean government scholarship from Uzbekistan staying with my wife and children. I wish to share a glimpse of our life here in Korea with my parents by traveling to some of the beautiful places with them.
What are the things that I should prepare and procedures I should take to invite my parents?A. Visitor's permit may be granted if you submit the following documents or materials to the Uzbekistan embassy in person. The process takes about 10 days in general.

- The official stamp of the president of the university must be included in your invitation letter. - Q. I'm an American currently studying in the second year of international studies in Korea on my own source of funding. What are the scholarships I can apply for other than the ones offered at the university?
A. First of all, you will have to keep checking the notices for scholarship offers outside of university since they are liable to change the number of offers and application period at any time. It may be helpful in mind that for most of the scholarships of this kind the process is carried out through the university although their sources may be from outside. For instance, you may have to submit your application to the division within the university that governs scholarship and international affairs or the recipients may be recommended and even selected by the university itself.

A. There is no other government funded scholarship for graduate students who are already enrolled at the university. Many of the scholarships offers are for prospective graduate students but some scholarships are open to existing graduate students as well. Refer to the table below for information on scholarship offers by private companies and public institutions.

- Q. I am a student from Kyrgyzstan who is planning to go to Korea to study next year. I have many medical concerns in case my wife gives birth there. Please tell me about the Korean health insurance system.
A. Foreigners can apply for health insurance through the National Health Insurance Corporation (http://www.nhic.or.kr/postal/site/eng) just like Koreans. However, you must reside in Korea for at least one year. The student, the student's spouse and children under the age of 20 can receive insurance benefits. You can also apply for insurance through other insurance companies.
The process will be completed when you finish foreigner registration at the Korea Immigration Service and submit documents that can prove the purpose of your stay to the National Health Insurance Corporation (English call center service no.: 02-390-2000).

A. The minimum Korean abilities currently needed to enter a Korean university are skills equivalent to TOPIK level 3, and you must obtain level 4 before graduation. Students, who enter programs where only English is necessary for classes and a diploma can be obtained in English alone, such as a college of international studies, can enter with just an official English score and do not have to fulfill the TOPIK level 4 requirements.

I am currently enrolled in a Master's program. I heard about the gold card system at a foreign student's employment expo. What exactly is it? What is the process of evaluation?A. The gold is a system where by appointment of Ministry of Knowledge Economy a corporation or facility that seeks employ overseas technical human resources issues an employment recommendation letter (gold card) in the name of the Korea Institute for Advancement of technology President to support issuance of a special activity visa (E-7) and grant special privileges related to entering and leaving the country.

- Korean Bachelor's degree or above (no experience).

- Maximum visa limit period: 5 years (3 years for a general E-7).
- Issuance of multiple visas: Especially for shirt-term employment visa holder (C-4) only gold card holders can issue multiple visas with a maximum expiration period of 1 year.
- Activities can be added to the residence qualifications.
- Workplace can be added and changed (agreement of the current employer is compulsory).
- Minimum period of residence necessary for issuance of permanent residency reduces to 3 years (generally 5 years).
- Housekeeper may be accompanied for children's education (privilege usually limited to diplomats).
- In case spouse gets employed in the country, the souse visa may be converted to an employment visa.

- Q. How can I get certificates to prove I acquired a degree in Korea after I return to my country (China)?
I am a Chinese student in Korea, set to graduate in February, next year. I heard that I will only be able to get a job in China if I prove my education and degree acquired here with a certification. What kind of certificate is this, and how do I get one issued?A. You can get a 'certificate of foreign studies and return to homeland' from the Chinese consulate. It is issued to Chinese students in Korea who have completed their studies. This certificate will be issued as important credentials to recognize employment, entrance to school and re-entry of foreign diploma after returning to China. It will provide the identity of the returning foreign student, and the fact that the student studied overseas to obtain a diploma, and can provide benefits from the government and facilities. Many domestic facilities currently require a 'certificate of foreign studies and return to homeland' when employing foreign students.
