Division of Food Biotechnology and Biosystems Engineering

Division of Food Biotechnology and Biosystems Engineering is the applied field related to development and production of technologies and facilities, which are required for the fields of food, organisms, energy & environment, and biomaterials. We aim to train high-quality individuals who can contribute to the development of next-generation bioindustry, energy, environment, and food bio by applying a variety of engineering knowledge and bioscience technologies to bioindustry.

Biosystems engineering is the applied engineering field related to development and production of technologies and facilities required in the fields of food, organisms, energy, environment, and biomaterials by combining natural science and engineering technology. Department of Biosystems Engineering aims to cultivate high-quality individuals who can contribute to the development of next-generation bioindustry, energy, environment, and food by applying a variety of engineering knowledge and natural science technologies to biosystems. Recently, it is contributing to mechanization and automation for efficient biological production. It is a promising field of engineering which can contribute to development of the society by developing and providing various engineering technologies demanded in the fields of food processing, environmental improvement, and new and renewable energy along with the increased interests by the society in the fields of food, energy, and environment.

Department of Food Science & Biotechnology

As the advanced bioengineering field of the 21st century, Department of Food Science & Biotechnology focuses on R&D in high value-added industrialization technologies based on specialized theories and technologies on overall technologies using food and biomaterials; thus, educating and developing development of functional foods using all bioresources such as microorganisms and animals/plants, exploring new materials using advanced engineering technologies, development of efficient separation and purification technologies of bioactive substances, development of optimized technologies for securing economic feasibility of production processes, development of functional foods and verification of efficacies for nutrition increase of food, and establishment of a system to secure microorganism and chemical safety of food and biomaterials.

We also aim to establish an eco-friendly plant protection system, develop and commercialize useful substances from insects and microorganisms, and understand the fundamentals of it.

Division of Horiculture, Agricultural and Resource Economics aims to cultivate agricultural experts and instructors equipped with theoretical and practical ability by providing various courses from advanced technology to eco-friendly agriculture, industrialization of agricultural products, distribution, and exportation according to rapidly changing agricultural policies and demands of the farming sites.

Department of Horiculture is carrying out various researches on characteristics and physiology of various horticultural plants in the fields of vegetables, fruits, and flowers, as well as researches on cultivation management technologies and automation controlled cultivation to produce high quality horticultural products. We also strive to cultivate outstanding new species by adding genetic engineering technologies to the existing methods of selection and crossbreeding in the fields of horticultural breeding and molecular genetics. Furthermore, this study is composed of following 2 fields: protected horticulture field for studying methods to develop facilities and control the environment within the facilities to efficiently and intensively produce horticultural crops; and product management field related to storage, processing, and distribution technologies to raise added values after production. Through this, students learn to become important horticultural experts for agricultural development and environmental preservation.

Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics

Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics covers all studies related to economy, business administration, and society occurring in the frontlines of the agriculture, farming villages, and farming industries. In particular, we study academic fields of agricultural management, distribution economy, food economy, local community, and local development, as well as resources and environmental economy. The objective is to cultivate experts in agricultural food distribution and economy. Additionally, the department helps students to enhance their global competencies by developing understanding of agriculture based on academic theories and providing the exchange student program to apply economic theories of Korea to agricultural sites around the world.

Department of Regional Infrastructure Engineering

Department of Regional Infrastructure Engineering was established in 1954 and is an applied engineering for applying the cutting-edge civil construction and environmental science technologies into regional development and environmental preservation. Students systematically study structural mechanics, material engineering, concrete engineering, road system engineering, reinforced concrete engineering, construction management&economics, irrigation drainage engineering, agricultural environment engineering, agricultural planning, environmental land utilization, hydrography, hydrology, GIS (Geographic Information System), civil engineering execution, soil mechanics, and geotechnics, and thus will grow as experts of cutting-edge construction and environmental preservation technology of the 21st century by advancing to graduate schools or working as civil engineers of state-funded enterprises including civic governmental officials, various levels of construction companies, Korea Water Resources Corporation, Korea Expressway Corporation, Korea Railroad (KORAIL), and Korea Rural Community Corporation.

School of Natural Resources and Environmental Science

The Department of Biological Environment from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the Department of Environment from the College of Natural Sciences conducted structural reform into the Department of Biological Environment and the Department of Environmental Science (Department of Environment) of the School of Natural Resources and Environmental Science through convergence and specialization of two majors to cultivate creative and practical individuals in accordance with “Sil-Sa-Gu-Si” (a Korean proverb meaning “to strive for pragmatism”). The educational vision for specialization aims for cultivation of 『creative and practical』 talents who will lead the bio environment and bio resources industry.

The Department of Biological Environment educates and studies the knowledge and technologies of environmental science and biological science for the preservation of human life, human health, and the environment, and the utilization of bio resources. Detailed majors include soil environmentology, plant nutritional science, environmental chemistry, biological control chemistry, environmental biochemistry, soil microorganism, natural materials for searching and developing high value active substances, bioenergy production research, environmental purification, and climate change. Department of Environmental Science

The Department of Environmental Science was the first environmental related department established in 1980 (the ‘Department of Environment’ was established in 1980). Environmental science is the study of researching and practicing measures to healthily maintain the correlation between humans and earth resources. The environment and industry are now complementing one another and developing alongside each other in accordance with the development of environment-related industries into green growth, such as low carbon green growth, environmental consulting, weather industry, and environmental restoration. To meet these social demands, the Department of Environmental Science studies and provides education on environmental problems.
